Snowed Home

11/30/2011: In the last 2 years I have taken 48 trips and flown 196,754 miles on 107 flights. I have spent all but 6 of those 450 hours in the Friendly Skies of United and gone around the world 8 times.

In that time I have been to Chicago 12 times, Las Vegas 10 times, Anchorage 9 times, Honolulu and New York 5 times, Washington DC 4 times, Los Angeles 3 times, Houston and London twice, and Amsterdam, Paris, Seoul, Boston, Mammoth Lakes, Miami and San Diego.

I have seen sunrises and sunsets over oceans and continents. I have gazed at the moon and the stars over the Atlantic and Pacific. I have seen Alaska, Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, and re-flown the polar routes that made me who I am today. I have slept like a baby over the same oceans I crossed before I was even born. I visited the city of my birth and had a magical week in a city that might someday be. I have been to places close to my heart and places that now are. I have avoided snowstorms, rainstorms, volcanoes and hurricanes. I have seen chutes deployed, engines tested and pulled planes on tarmacs. I have been seated in the Pilot's seat of A320's, B747's, B757's and B777's. I have seen an expensive iPhoto B737 retirement book made obsolete. I have flown the entire fleet but will always miss N591UA and N612UA. I have seen monuments built and the numbers 93 and 175 made sacred. I have made many friends and met such great people along the way. I have fulfilled lifelong dreams and dreamt up many more. I have seen and learned more in these past 2 years than I ever thought possible.

United used to give gold pins and plaques to 100,000 mile flyers that read "In Appreciation of your Valuable Contribution to Air Transport Progress." I collect one of each for every 100,00 miles flown thanks to eBay. But the truth is that I am undeserving of such an award. The real honor belongs to United and its predecessors who over 85 years has been the pioneering force in aviation and rightfully claim ownership of Airway One and this boy's heart. When I wake up tomorrow there will be more United planes in the sky than there have ever been and United will reclaim its place in the sky as the world's airline. For inspiring me to soar, always getting me home safe, and showing unwavering perseverance in the face of both tragedy and triumph, I am eternally, profoundly and unbelievably grateful.

Over the last 2 years I have spent every other weekend traveling but now realize how much I missed. Next year I will fly as I never have and will do so every year from now on. Next year I will fly the inaugural flight of the United 787 wherever it may go. Next year I will visit AKL, AMS, CDG, FRA, IAH, KOA, LAS, MMH, NRT, ORD, ZRH and who knows where. Next year I will fly around the world in 3 days and take a New Year's flight to Antarctica. Next year I will not stop.

A wise man once said: Never stop being a kid. Never stop feeling and seeing and being excited with great things like air and engines and sounds of sunlight within you. Wear your little mask if you must to protect you from the world but if you let that kid disappear you are grown up and you are dead.
